Doorstep Sports Clubs
At the end of last year, we were delighted to be awarded funding to set up two Doorstep Clubs in Exeter – these being an initiative from the Football League Trust, in partnership with Streetgames.
In brief, the principles of Doorstep Clubs are to engage and then keep disadvantaged youngsters involved in sport and develop their sporting habit for life. Doorstep Clubs encourages young people to experience lots of different sports often in multi-sport sessions and offers a variety of single-sports programmes for those who want to pursue a chosen sport. Offering a range of sports increases the probability of increasing frequency of participation and of achieving lasting regular participation.
Our popular Street Soccer session, which runs every Thursday evening on Kinnerton Way in Exwick, has now become a Doorstep Club. The first session of a 30-week programme took place in November and while the core football element remained, we also did a basketball session, which was a learning curve for all of us!
“Our Street Soccer sessions have been running for quite some time now – we have a regular core of around 25 participants – but we really wanted to see what else we could offer the group to get more people involved,” said Danny Harris, FITC sports development officer. "We're now also providing table-tennis sessions as well as football, and these are proving really popular."
We also run a second Doorstep Club in Wonford on a Monday evening, aimed at participants who attend the Phoenix Youth Club but might not otherwise be able to access such multi-sport activities.
